A message to Shores Area CU Members

Let me thank you for your patience in what has always been a trying time in the merger process.  The conversion of data files remains a complex undertaking that has a tendency to provide unpleasant surprises during its implementation.  Sometimes what seems so simple in the telling becomes frustratingly difficult in its completion.

We had some glitches but nothing that could not be taken care of pretty quickly.  Thanks to the members who let us know when something seemed awry and who communicated it quickly so as to help us mitigate any ill effects. We anticipate that there might continue to be ongoing issues in 3rd party settlements.  That is mostly in the ACH or Point of Sale or Debit and Credit card transactions as well as check processing.  I urge you to remain vigilant for anything that seems “out of the ordinary” and call the credit union main office (586-573-4110) for assistance or clarification if needed.

Allow me to once again welcome you to the family that is Unity Credit Union and be assured that we value your loyalty to credit union principles and our intentions to earn that loyalty every day.

Dennis Moriarity, CEO

UNITY VISA…A Classic Card that won’t rip you off

visaHave you looked at your non Unity credit card statements lately?  Noticed how many times you get a new credit card disclosure with a change in the terms of your card.  Has the credit card company raised your finance charge for no apparent reason or doubled it because you were a day late with a payment?  Is there one rate for purchases and much higher rate for cash advances?  Don’t be fooled by special introductory rates or rewards (in many plans you need to spend $10,000 to get $100 in rewards).

With Unity you get a simple Classic VISA Card with no annual fee, the same low 11.9% interest rate for both purchases and cash advances, and a 25 day grace period on new purchases.  It’s that simple.  Because you’re a member at Unity, you get the same deal that every other member gets.  Check our web site at www.unitycu.com or call our loan department at 586-576-4110 Ext. 41 for more information.  Remember to always check with YOUR Credit Union first before making any financial choices.     (Rates and terms subject to change.)

Important Information Concerning Online Shopping

Every month more and more people use their debit and/or credit card to purchase goods and services online.  Unfortunately there are retail websites that fail to take the necessary precautions to make sure your personal information is not compromised.   There are several things you can check to see if it is safe to make a purchase.  One of the best ways is to visit Reseller Ratings at www.resellerratings.com.  As the name implies, Reseller Ratings is a site where consumers openly post comments about their experiences on retail websites.  A reputable website will most likely have some form of credit or debit card verification process.  Some may call back to you or your financial institution to make sure the charges were authorized by you.  Look for the “lock” icon during the checkout process.  This icon identifies a secure connection and prevents the unwanted compromise of your information.  Using these simple steps can help ensure a safer experience during online shopping.

Get Your MasterMoney Card Today
A MasterMoney Card looks like a credit card with the MasterCard logo, but it acts both as a “plastic check” and as an ATM card. There are many benefits to using a MasterMoney Card! Purchases are automatically deducted from your checking account, so you don’t have to worry about paying a credit card bill at the end of the month. You can shop anywhere MasterCard is accepted without having to write a
check and wait for check approval. You can feel safer because you won’t have to carry a lot of cash. But, if you do need cash, a MasterMoney Card doubles as an ATM card for withdrawals, balance inquires and transfers by using your PIN (Personal Identification Number). A MasterMoney Card is quick and convenient to use… get yours today!

Bank Fees are Big Business
Recently we have had an opportunity to view the revenue streams that have
developed as a result of the lowered margins on loans. Amazing how imaginative Financial Institutions have gotten to ensure that their income streams are not reduced as a consequence of anemic lending patterns or reduced investment returns. So what category do you fall into? Are you a Platinum or Gold customer/member or just a
Silver or Bronze? If you are in the latter category you are probably paying significant fees for even basic financial services. As a matter of fact even in the upper categories you will probably still find yourself paying fees as just another victim of statement shock.
As margins continue to remain low it is no wonder that alternate sources of income have been developed. These “alternate sources” can have a big effect on your finances. Beware of “free” anything. The small print usually points out that there is no free lunch. Examine your statements closely to determine “how many” and “how much”. A little effort can go a long way to saving you and your family a lot of money. By finding an institution that relies on reducing it’s expenses and maintaining a “low cost” environment to keep your costs down you will keep more of your hard earned cash. Always check with your Credit Union first……

Fraud continues to be a problem

Not a day goes by when word comes out about some new scam designed to make the bad guys richer at the consumers' expense. As a reminder:
Do not give out your personal information to anyone who presents themselves as needing it for any reason. Many of the scams purport to need the information to verify, authenticate or otherwise use it to assist in solving some bogus problem "with your account". If you get a request like this contact either the authorities or UNITY and we will assist you in determining your next course of action.

Use Credit Union Tools!
Unity has the best resources to help you manage your money. Many of the tools we offer prove especially helpful to those members with checking accounts. We offer “anywhere, anytime access” with “The Punchline” automated phone system, and the “Punchline 2” home banking system at our web site www.unitycu.com, direct deposit and payroll deduction, ATM and MasterMoney Cards, and automated bill payments. We want to increase our availability through many different products and services in order to make your life easier and give you no reason to go elsewhere for your financial needs. You will also find that our fees for these services are much less than most other financial institutions.
